It is that time of year when thoughts turn to Driver CPC courses and ensuring that your ongoing training requirements are up-to-date. The Road Safety Authority (RSA) has a clear process for professional development for those who drive for a living and failure to comply with these can mean that you are not able to earn a wage. In more specific terms, and according to the RSA itself, periodic CPC training is necessary to ensure that professional drivers are Better, safer and more socially responsible More environmentally aware and cost conscious Physically healthier All of these are admirable aims and it is hard to see why anyone would try to avoid periodic training… but you would be surprised! So what is required? If you have already undertaken the basic Initial CPC then it is simply a matter of attending one day of refresher training each year with an RSA-approved instructor. That’s it. Nothing more, just a single day’s training each year and you can get back out on the road, safe in the knowledge that your legal obligations have been met for another year. If, on the other hand, you are new to professional driving or looking to get into the industry then you will need to complete Initial CPC training, but even this is pretty straightforward. The four basic steps are as follows: Successfully complete the relevant theory test for the vehicle you wish to drive (HGV, bus or combined) Successfully complete a two-hour case study theory test Successfully complete the standard 90-minute driving test Successfully complete a 30-minute practical test Let’s face it, if you are looking to become a professional HGV or bus driver then Steps 1 and 3 outlined are things you will have to do anyway so completing Steps 2 and 4 in addition to those is hardly a big ask. Still confused? Don’t be… if you are still unsure what to do or whether you are due to attend a CPC refresher why not ring the experts at ISM Training. We are an RSA-approved CPC training and all our instructors are also RSA approved.
